|, December 11, 2018 Let me start off this review by saying that although Che is smartly divided into two separate feature length films, both run at roughly 135 minutes, it should be watched as a whole in order to garner the entire experience. Superbly filmed by director Steven Soderbergh, and Del Toro's immersive performance in the title role is of the highest class. Soderbergh's austere narration and intent to wilfully frustrate a conventional, hagiographical account of Che will alienate, but the steadfastness of this approach bears fruit. The second part of Che is a much more bleak film and shows Che and his movement in full decline for many reasons but mainly because the people of Bolivia don't emphasize with Che and what his armed struggle can do for their people. A sprawling, epic look at the life of Che Guevara through the lense of Steven Soderbergh. After arriving in La Paz, Bolivia late in 1966, by 1967, Che with several Cuban volunteers, have raised a small guerrilla army to take on the militarist Bolivian movement. As the US supported Bolivian army prepares to defeat him, Che and his beleaguered force struggle against the increasingly hopeless odds.

It helps to know that this was originally brought to life as a Terrence Malick screenplay about Che's disastrous forray in Bolivia. The second part of Soderbergh's biopic is a dark, hypnotic and sometimes frustrating portrait of a warrior in decline, with a terrific central performance from Del Toro.
