Jeremy McQueen's Black Iris Project, which focuses intensely on bringing Black stories to life through ballet, is now streaming the Emmy-nominated dance film A Mother's Rite on the company's website and on Vimeo.
Even though we don't know today what the future holds, we ask our community to join us as we say 'yes' to supporting the arts, 'yes' to the future of the Ballet, and 'yes' to change and innovation. The theme of the season is “Leap of Faith,” an invitation to the community amidst the uncertainty of the months ahead, and a commitment by the Company to present a complete season, whether it is offered in the War Memorial Opera House, online, or a combination of both. Most recently, under shelter-in-place orders, SF Ballet participated in 31 episodes of SF Loves Learning, a television show created by SFUSD in partnership with KTVU. With his brother Harold, he purchased the company from the Opera in 1942, renaming it San Francisco Ballet. Other anniversary initiatives included a commemorative book, San Francisco Ballet at Seventy-Five, and the broadcast of Tomasson's Nutcracker in December 2008 on the Great Performances: Dance in America series on PBS, produced in partnership with KQED Public Television in San Francisco.
Anima Animus toured with SF Ballet to Sadler’s Wells Theatre in 2019 and was “easily one of the highlights” (Seeing Dance) of the Company’s four-program London performances. To me it is both important to work with choreographers who have a good understanding of the classical ballet vocabulary, and also thrilling to see how they can stretch and challenge those traditions in ways that we've never thought of before. We are committed to moving forward with creating the 2021 Repertory Season for our dancers and audiences in the safest and most sensitive way possible.
