With the goal of securing her promotion, Lily ventures into the most isolated areas of the mountains to collect the songs and finds herself increasingly enchanted - not only by the rugged purity of the music, but also by the raw courage and endurance of the local people as they carve out meaningful lives against the harshest conditions. Where story elements seem imposed - like a romance between Lily and local war veteran and musician Tom - Aiden Quinn, like a lesbian denouement -although E.Katherine Kerr is really excellent as Elna`s lover Harriet - and like the proposed commercial exploitation of the region - that`s where the film fails to convince. Janet McTeer`s solemnity gets a bit dull - but the location photography and the folk singers are wonderful. She leaves the city in disgust and heads for West Tennessee where hersister Elna - Jane Adams - is trying to maintain a school in the poverty strickenAppalachians.
The film's score was written by David Mansfield, who also assembled a roster of female country music artists to perform mostly traditional mountain ballads. This slice of trenchant Americana, grabs you by your lapels, churns you up a bit, and soon has you slapping your knees with blissful exuberance. "Songcatcher" is perhaps too laden with messages for its own good, but it has many moments of musical beauty, and it's interesting to watch Janet McTeer as she starts with Lily Penleric as a cold, abstract academic, and allows her, little by little, to warm in the sun of these songs. | Rating: 3/4
