It’s home to some of the best hikes in the country, a wide variety of activities to suit all types of traveller and one of the prettiest lakefront beach areas in New Zealand. Not far from town, the trail criss-crosses steeply up the side of the mountain, providing insane views from the top. Striking land forms, soaring mountains, and crystal clear lakes, the natural beauty of Wanaka is an unforgettable experience. The world seems to extend around you, warped by distance and perspective; beauty everywhere you look.
The hike took about 4 hours to return to the car park and you’re tired after the return drive. Not everything is in the town of Wanaka itself (in fact, a few of the hikes are a full hour away). Tiny planes offer a bird’s-eye view of this magnificent wilderness area.
It’s a partially submerged willow tree and is famous mostly thanks to Instagram. You can do wine tasting at Rippon Vineyard although strangely there’s no cafe or restaurant. Parts of the Rob Roy Glacier Track are currently closed, but hopefully it gets sorted soon as it’s an excellent walk. You can buy the tickets in advance.
