Sayuri's story begins in a poor fishing village in 1929, when, as a nine-year-old with unusual blue-gray eyes, she is taken from her home and sold into slavery to a renowned . . But Iwasaki categorically denies any ritualized sexual aspect to geisha life, especially the scene in Memoirs of a Geisha where Chiyos virginity is up for auction; this practice, called mizuage, was strictly reserved for oiran. There was something so special about the writing style, I can't really put it into words. But the friendship ended last year when Mrs Iwasaki read Memoirs after it was translated into Japanese.
